The non-profit sports school began its activities in the middle of the 20th century under the name "Avangard". In 1994, the institution was renamed to DYUSSH "Ukraine", and later the honored coach of Ukraine Oleksandr Kulyk was elected as its head. In 2016, the sports school was re-registered as KDYUSSH "Ukraine" under PJSC "Sumbud". In 2023, KDYUSSH "Ukraine" was named in honor of Oleksandr Kulyk, an honorary citizen of the city of Sumy, who died on March 1, 2022, defending Sumy from the russian invaders.
Oleksandr Vasyliovych Kulyk is an honored cycling coach of Ukraine. He trained the Olympic champion of 1988 Oleksandr Kyrychenko and the silver medalist of the 2000 Olympics Oleksandr Fedenko, as well as a number of masters of sports and champions of Ukraine in cycling.
During the years of activity of KDYUSSH "Ukraine", a number of national teams representatives of Ukraine, champions of Ukraine and masters of sports were trained, the camp "Orliatko" was revived and modernized, several football and baseball fields, basketball and volleyball courts were built and reconstructed, a gym and a specialized weightlifting hall were equipped, and the rowing base, where the two-time Olympic champion Oleksandr Shaparenko once began his sports career, was restored.
Today, the head of KDYUSSH is the son of Oleksandr Kulyk – multiple champion of Ukraine, member of the national cycling team (road and track), master of sports of international class – Andriy Kulyk.
